Research Summary

I am a scholar of U.S. and global history, with a particular focus on U.S. foreign relations, international political economy, development, and global environmental history. I am the author of Of Limits and Growth: The Rise of  Global Sustainable Development in the Twentieth Century (Cambridge University Press, 2015) and co-editor, with Erez Manela, of The Development Century: A Global History (Cambridge University Press, 2018). I have also published numerous articles, book chapters, and review essays.

My latest book explores criticisms about how the concept of “economic growth” has been defined, assessed, and measured across the world. Titled The Mismeasure of Progress, the book was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2020. Currently, he is researching and writing about the history of privatization in U.S. foreign relations, the history and evolution of management consulting, and the ecological consequences of U.S. foreign policy.
